Musician Courtney Love emerged on the grunge scene in the early 1990s as the outspoken girlfriend of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Soon, exposure from the famous relationship helped launch her musical career as the lead singer of rock band Hole. With her self-proclaimed “kinder-whore” look—which consisted of torn babydoll dresses over ripped fishnet stockings and bird's-nest hair adorned with kiddie barrettes—she combined the characteristics of young and sweet with those of tough and reckless.
